JPEG, PNG or WebP? Choose for photos and transparency
There is no single best format for every image. Check what the destination accepts, then compare appearance and file size among those options.
A quick comparison
| Format | Consider it for | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| JPEG | Photos without transparency | No transparent background |
| PNG | Images needing transparency | Photos may become larger |
| WebP | Compatible web destinations | Attachment support varies |
PNG and WebP support transparency. Pichn turns transparent areas white when saving JPEG. Check whether that change is acceptable before converting.
Choose for the destination
For a photo attachment, check the accepted formats first. If JPEG is required, Pichn can convert a HEIC, PNG or WebP input to JPEG. It does not offer conversion back to the input format. If your JPEG already meets the requirements, use the original directly.
Check backgrounds on logos and cutouts
Pichn preserves transparency when the selected output is PNG or WebP, but the input format is not offered as an output. If you already have a PNG and need a PNG, conversion may not be necessary.
The extension alone does not determine file size
Detailed photographs and simple graphics behave differently. A JPEG converted to PNG may grow. Check the before-and-after sizes, then try a different allowed output or a smaller longest edge. Identical quality numbers do not promise identical appearance across formats.
A practical Pichn workflow
- Select the input format from the menu.
- Choose a different output accepted by the destination.
- Set a size limit or dimensions if needed, then convert.
- Open the saved file and inspect backgrounds, text and fine detail.
Animated files such as animated WebP become a single still image in Pichn. Do not use it when motion must be preserved.
