HEIC will not open: five checks before converting

If a photo cannot be selected or opened, separate two questions: is the original file available on this device, and does the destination accept its format? Checking these first can save repeated conversions.

1. Check the actual format

Look at the photo information or filename for .heic or .heif. A sharing method may already have produced a JPEG. Apple notes that sharing can use a more compatible format depending on the recipient. A JPEG not appearing in the HEIC picker is therefore not necessarily a problem.

2. Download cloud-only photos first

A thumbnail in your photo library does not always mean the full file is stored locally. Open the photo on your device and save a local file if needed. Then select it again in Pichn. Wait for the download to finish, particularly on an unreliable connection.

3. Treat format, size and dimensions as separate requirements

A form may require JPEG or PNG, a file below 1 MB, and specific pixel dimensions. Converting to JPEG alone does not satisfy all three. Read the attachment instructions before choosing settings. Renaming a filename to .jpg does not change the image data inside it.

4. Start with one photo

  1. Open the HEIC converter and select a HEIC or HEIF file.
  2. Choose an output format accepted by the destination: JPEG, PNG or WebP.
  3. If necessary, choose the file size limit tool and set the limit.
  4. Press Convert, check the resulting size and dimensions, then save.

Pichn accepts up to 20 files per batch. If large photos fail, try one to three. Processing runs in your browser, so available device memory matters.

5. Keep the original

Use the converted file as a copy for a particular task. Keep the original HEIC for future use. Resizing or compression can lose detail that the smaller file cannot restore. Converting away from HEIC does not always reduce file size.
