Crop photos square or portrait without cutting off faces or text

Understand aspect ratio versus pixel dimensions, adjust the first-photo preview and inspect every image in a batch.

Aspect ratio and pixel dimensions are separate

A 1:1 ratio means equal width and height. Both 1080×1080px and 400×400px are square, but their detail and file sizes differ. Check dimensions as well as ratio when a destination specifies both. Making a portrait composition does not require stretching the source vertically.

Choose what to keep in the first-photo preview

Open the page for the source format, select your photos and choose Crop & resize. Pick a ratio, then adjust the position and zoom in the first-photo preview. Darkened areas are outside the crop. Check that the tops of heads, fingertips and document edges stay inside.

Worked example: turn a landscape image into a square

In a Pichn test, a 1200×800px image with transparency on the left was cropped at 1:1 with the horizontal position at 65%. JPEG output measured 800×800px. The crop kept a square slightly to the right of center and removed the darkened area of the preview.

These values describe an example checked on October 17, 2026, not a guarantee for every image. For portraits, check the face and hands. Separate images with different compositions rather than applying one crop blindly.

Requesting dimensions does not enlarge the original

Pichn does not upscale beyond the original photo. Requesting a large output from a small source cannot create missing detail. A file size limit may further reduce the dimensions. Read the actual output width and height.

Inspect composition in every result

A batch uses the same relative crop position and ratio as the first image. Faces and subjects may be elsewhere in other photos. Group similar compositions and inspect every result before saving.

Start again from the original when changing the crop

A cropped image cannot restore the discarded area by itself. Keep the original if you may need another ratio later. JPEG can remain JPEG; PNG and WebP currently require another output format. Avoid unnecessary conversion of an image that already meets your needs.

Pichn instructions describe the current implementation. Follow the destination’s requirements for uploading or publishing images.

Completely free, up to 20 photos. Keep your originals and check the saved results.
